Growing the economy
We’re involved with a number of projects to grow the economy and create jobs. We work in partnership with Grabouw Transformation to support non-profit companies with their business plans and applications to funders. We also work with the Grabouw Development Agency to help drive investment and growth through a series of projects in Grabouw.
A Hangklip and Kleinmond Tourism Working Group is now active in the KBR to identify tourism opportunities for the local community and work as a collective to grow these. MORE
Environmental education
In partnership with the local schools and community groups, we assists with environmental education classes and outings. We also work with Child Welfare Kleinmond and the Lego Group. Boxes of Lego have been donated by the Lego Group to welfare schools under the management of Child Welfare Kleinmond. MORE
Securing water
The Kogelberg Biosphere works with partners to coordinate an alien clearing project now managed by Groenland Water User’s Association (GWUA). At the same time, we’re managing an invasive alien clearing project in the Hangklip Area. A contractor from the local community and his team are employed to undertake the alien clearing. MORE
Protecting nature
The Biosphere is home to an array of indigenous animals that often suffer due to habit loss, wildfires, snaring and poisoning. The Kogelberg Biosphere has trained a group of volunteers as Wildlife First Responders that can respond to incidents and work together with veterinarians in the area. And we’re looking at starting a wildlife rehabilitation centre. The Biosphere is also partnering with Cape Leopard Trust and CapeNature to set up a snare response protocol. MORE
Sustainable management of resources
We’re been communicating with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment as we highlight the many concerns around sustainable management of our natural resources. We’ve taken a partnership approach, and represent the collective who are working to protect our natural resources. MORE
The philosophy of the KOGELBERG BIOSPHERE
Members agree to adhere to the philosophy of the Kogelberg Biosphere. We are a biosphere and our focus is on finding local solutions to global challenges, as set out in the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme. The goal is to create a sustainable future for people and for nature in our area. Here’s more on what we’re about.
