Explore and celebrate nature at this year’s Kleinmond Fynbos Festival
This October, Kleinmond invites you to become part of the story of our Kogelberg Biosphere’s phenomenal fynbos.
The Kleinmond Fynbos Festival, taking place from 3 to 11 October 2025, is a lively celebration of the Cape’s unique floral heritage, and in particular, the incredible work of our region’s nature-loving residents who protect it.
This year is especially meaningful because it marks the 50th anniversary of the Kleinmond Nature Conservation Society – a member of the Kogelberg Biosphere. The festival offers a mix of education, entertainment and ecological engagement; a fun day out not only for those who care about nature, but also residents and visitors who are simply curious about fynbos.
Be sure to stop by the Kleinmond Public Library, situated on the corner of 3rd Street and 5th Avenue (just off Main Road). The Kogelberg Biosphere’s information will be readily available at a stall, where you can get involved and learn more about protecting one of the world’s most biodiverse regions.
Another not-to-miss activity is the morning lectures from Monday to Friday. Corlie Hugo, CEO of the Kogelberg Biosphere, will host two talks at the library:
– Thursday: 9.30 – 10.30: African penguins on the brink of extinction?
– Friday 11.00 – 12.00: Kogelberg Biosphere projects, including the Wildlife Rescue and Training Centre
Aside from Corlie’s presentations, you’re invited to join exhibitions, go bird watching with expert guides, enjoy hikes through the biosphere’s nature-rich mountains and even try a full-moon cycle. The NSRI presents a demonstration for young people at the Kleinmond Harbour, while Chelsea Flower Show gold-medal winning botanist Leon Kluge officially opens the event.
Why are celebrations like this important?
It’s where we remember that living in a biosphere, especially one as biodiversity-rich as the Kogelberg Biosphere, means being part of a connected system where people and nature live in balance. Owning a home or visiting the biosphere makes you a caretaker of biodiversity, helping to protect endangered plant and animal species, and fragile habitats. The way you use water, manage waste, build or renovate your home, or even interact with the natural world around you can directly affect the health of the whole system. And you are not a bystander of that system – you are an integral part of it.
Keen to learn more about the flora found in this incredible biosphere?
The Kleinmond Fynbos group, led by Vic, Thea and Magriet Brink, will launch a fynbos resource in the form of an interactive website on Friday 3 October at the festival. The Kleinmond Fynbos website, co-created with LoveGreen Communications, provides information about the spectacular fynbos species growing in the Kogelberg Biosphere, specifically around Kleinmond. It’s a wonderful resource that brings to life the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom’s species online, and lets the fynbos teach you, wherever you are.

An urgent call to action: Conservation at a crossroads
Nearly half of the Kogelberg Biosphere is made up of formal protected areas. These serve as our core conservation zones – the places where nature is meant to flourish.
The living waters of South Africa’s Kogelberg
Beneath the surface lies a liquid jewel box, where nature keeps its treasures. I’ve travelled and dived in many places in South Africa and the world. And I’ve witnessed why this ocean stretch is extraordinary – it’s home to over 3500 marine species
