R44 Lifesavers
Many tourists drive the R44, also known as Clarence Drive, between Gordon’s Bay and Kleinmond. In fact, this drive is world-renowned for its beautiful views and nature. But reckless driving and speeding along the R44 are a growing cause for concern as it results in serious injuries and loss of life to people and wild animals. Recently, there have been a number of road collisions that have caused fatalities. At the same time, there are records of grysbok, klipspringers, baboons, caracals, porcupines and otters that have all been killed on this road, as well as smaller mammals, reptiles and birds. For many populations, this rate of mortality is unsustainable.
On 5 November 2024, partners came together from across the Kogelberg Biosphere to look at this challenge – and the R44 Task Team was established. This team is working to increase awareness of the serious threat to people and animals of reckless driving and speeding in the Kogelberg Biosphere, and will be seeking solutions to this problem. That includes a campaign for drivers to slow down, drive with care and be R44 lifesavers.
