Each spring, our public green spaces come alive with wildflowers, birds and pollinators. To protect and encourage this natural cycle, mowing of some public parks, verges and sidewalks will be paused for a short period.
"Why mowing of public parks and sidewalks will pause during spring?"
Why are we doing this?
Wildflower growth
Many local wildflowers need this season to bloom fully and produce seeds, ensuring their return in the years ahead.
Pollinators at work
Bees, butterflies and other pollinators rely on spring flowers for nectar and pollen. These small creatures play a vital role in keeping our ecosystems – and our food systems – healthy.
Biodiversity
By allowing plants to grow and seed, we create habitats for endangered species, insects, birds and other small animals, strengthening our natural heritage.
Environmental benefits
Less mowing reduces fuel use and emissions, and allows soil and plant life to restore naturally.
What this means for residents
– Parks and sidewalks may look a little “wilder” during spring, but this is intentional and temporary.
– Mowing will resume once the seeding and pollination period has passed, ensuring public spaces remain neat and accessible.
– This small adjustment helps us balance human needs with the health of our local environment.
Your support matters
By understanding and supporting this initiative, you are helping protect the Kogelberg Bioshere’s unique biodiversity and ensuring we and future generations can enjoy our rich floral displays each spring. Together, we can create greener, healthier spaces for both people and nature.
A conservation collective
This initiative is a continued work in progress thanks to the combined efforts of the Overstrand Municipality, Kogelberg CREW, Kleinmond Nature Conservation Society (Kleinmond Nature), Betty’s Bay Conservancy, Coastal Rewilding, the Kogelberg Biosphere and a handful of local volunteers. Please get in touch with your nearest conservation agency if you would like to adopt a sidewalk near you.
The biosphere’s role
The Kogelberg Biosphere is a UNESCO-designated biosphere, recognised as the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom. It’s home to the richest concentration of plant species on the planet and a unique mix of wildlife. Our role is to bring people and nature together – protecting biodiversity while supporting sustainable livelihoods.
That’s why we are part of this initiative, as we support and drive conservation actions, like pausing mowing in spring, to safeguard the natural heritage that makes our biosphere so extraordinary.
